Writing Content For Search Engines Versus Your Readers
If you are doing any sort of article marketing you might become frustrated as you attempt to write content for your site. There are two distinct camps with differing viewpoints when it comes to writing online content and you wonder which is right and which path you should follow. I will attempt to help you through this muddy water and understand both points of view from my own personal experience as an internet marketer over the past several years.
Now, one side of the coin states that you should be writing to cater to search engines, which will bring you visitors to your site. Higher search engine rankings and gaining favor seo-wise with both on page seo and off page seo should mean more income and a more profitable business.
The problem with writing your content strictly with seo in mind is that often your writing becomes strangled by the seo rules. Your prose feels unnatural and forced as you try to fit all the necessary seo elements into your articles or blog posts. Yes, it is easy to cleverly fit all the necessary seo elements into your writing but in doing so you might feel that your writing doesn’t quite flow in the same manner in which you speak or write naturally.
The other side says that writing purely for your readers is good enough and that any deviation from this goal is purely an attempt to game the system and is dishonest in its basic premise. Many writers feel that a natural writing pattern more than makes up for the lack of seo rankings and you will wind up with happier readers which leads to increased income. The freedom of free flowing writing is pleasurable to the human mind and soul.
The problem with writing strictly for your readers is that, of class, your search engine rankings will suffer from it. I know that this might sound unfair or rediculous but in my experience it is true. True, well written and thought out content written for information sake simply doesn’t make it to the top of the search engine rankings or with few exceptions. And what are those exceptions.
I have found that the only two exceptions that will bring you good search engine rankings in spite of not giving a hoot about seo is the age of a website and the amount of content on that site. Basically, by writing regularly over a long period of time you can overcome the handicapp of writing strictly for your readers. By publishing articles on a daily basis over a year or more you can garner the search engine’s favor and still rank well in spite of not focusing on the traditional seo parameters.
While there is no real correct answer to the question of how you should write or whether you should focus on seo or not, I have found that a gentle balance and a combination of techniques work well. By thinking of certain seo techniques or elements while you are writing you can get the benefit of seo techniques while you are writing for your readership. Also, using a mixture of seo articles and informative articles written in your own style can both bring readers to your site and give them what they are looking for when they get there.
